Physics & Chemistry
The Science Department aims to stimulate interest in Physics and Chemistry through exciting lessons with an emphasis on practical skills and to encourage pupils to continue the study of Science at tertiary level. The department has a well-qualified laboratory technician, Mr Robert Muumba, who oversees the set-up for practical work and the maintenance and ordering of equipment. The teaching staff is highly qualified, committed and enthusiastic. There are five state-of-the-art laboratories which are shared with the Life Sciences Department.
One of the main aims of the Science Department is to encourage girls to pursue the study of science and be inspired by the wonderful art works, the interactive Periodic Table and Graffiti Wall. The teachers are innovative in the incorporation of digital devices and thinking skills into the practical tasks.
Google Classroom is being used as a means of communication of important announcements to the pupils, distributing study notes, worksheets and providing links to websites and videos to extend and enrich the content covered in class.
Use is made of the online revision platform established by the Siyavula organisation. Everything Science can be used to consolidate what they do in the classroom. They can move through revision exercises at their own pace until they have achieved a level of mastery. The platform is available on all mobile devices, so accessible for those few minutes in the car in a traffic jam or waiting for the hockey match to start.
The feedback surveys completed by the pupils provide useful information to the teachers and are used to inform future approaches in meeting the needs of the pupils.
