The Visual Arts course is concerned with the development of the pupil’s aesthetic sense and an awareness of the value of Art as an integral part of daily life. The pupil is guided to develop conceptual and practical skills, as well as a critical ability to understand and express opinion on Visual Culture Studies and artworks.
During the FET phase (Grades 10 – 12), pupils will experiment with various media and techniques with the aim to compile a portfolio of practical work in which their evolution as an artist is displayed. Emphasis is placed on the development of creative processes and conceptualisation skills. Exposure to, and exploration of, contemporary art making practices including printmaking, painting, drawing, photography and design are encouraged, avoiding prescriptive methods of expression, thus facilitating flexibility in choice of subject matter and means of expression.
Design is a relatively new accredited subject for schools. At this stage Design courses can be taken on a diploma and B.Tech degree level at certain Universities. Not all Design disciplines are available as B.Tech degrees, however, and some investigation is therefore advised. There are also a number of private colleges offering Design and again some are accredited for B.Tech degree level. As such, Design is taken as an additional subject in Matric. An informed choice is made in the last term of Ante Matric regarding this.
Design can be said to be increasingly relevant as a subject career, we are surrounded by Design on a daily level. From the packaging of our mild and cereal to our shoes and the cars we drive. The field of Design has so many genres, the more prominent ones for tertiary study being Interior Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Fashion Design and Multimedia Studies.
