Roedean School Music

Roedean School Music

Music forms an integral part of the daily life at Roedean and girls are encouraged to take up a musical instrument. Our various musical groups are often seen performing for school engagements and other prestigious calendar events. Our aim is to cultivate a love of music and performing arts from as young as Grade 0.

Roedean School has both Contemporary and Classical Music Departments, in which the girls receive tuition in instruments ranging from drums and bass guitar to piano and orchestral instruments.

The Contemporary Department accommodates rehearsal facilities for the Orchestra, Jazz Band, and the Rock and Pop Bands, with teaching facilities for the individual instruments. The Classical Department accommodates practice rooms and teaching facilities for Subject Music and individual tuition. Practical and theory examinations are offered with the Trinity School of London and The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop, and forms part of the practical component for the curriculum subject, Music.

“The Music Department has also been involved in several successful overseas tours.”

The Music Picnic takes place each year in late August and is truly a highlight on the events calendar. Picnic baskets are hauled out from the backs of closets, hats are dusted off, and the Music Department prepares for a celebration of sound. Both the Junior School and Senior School music groups perform, providing enjoyment for the Roedean community.

We are honoured to have hosted the Roedean Music Competition, in collaboration with Yamaha and Lovemore Music, for the last fifteen years. Generously sponsored by the aforementioned organisations, this competition welcomes the finest talent from schools throughout Gauteng. After several days of adjudication, finalists are chosen to perform at a prestigious Gala Evening, at which the winners of each category are decided.

Girls are offered opportunities to participate in ensembles in which talents are developed within in a group. We offer the following ensembles:

  • Orchestra ( Senior School )
  • Junior and Senior String Ensemble
