Foundation Phase

From the very start, we make every effort to encourage children to learn to read, so that, by the time the children reach Grade 3, they are confident and fluent readers. Our pupils are introduced to Jolly Phonics, a multi-sensory child-centred approach to teaching literacy, in which they gently, but rapidly acquire the necessary literacy skills that will enable them to read fluently and produce independent pieces of work that are of a high standard by the end of their Foundation Phase.

We promote a clear, positive attitude to number work, and use practical material to reinforce concepts when appropriate. Fostering a positive relationship with mathematics from a very early age is paramount, and investment at this stage sets children on the road to future success.  We use the Abacus Evolve scheme, from the United Kingdom, to support the children’s learning. These materials are proven to enable all children to develop mastery and to succeed in maths.”

History, Science, and Geography are explored through project work. Music, art, drama, and play are as important and vital to nurturing self-confidence and the power of the imagination. Outdoor skills are promoted through participation in sport, the daily use of the adventure playground, participating in active classroom sessions, and exploring the fairy garden; they add a wonderful richness to childhood at St Margaret’s

All our girls are involved in the annual school play, as well as special assemblies, sports days, and swimming galas. St Margaret’s has its own heated swimming pool, tailor-made to the requirements of our younger girls. Outings, specialist visits, and special days form an important part of the curriculum.

Our Life Skills curriculum develops the girls’ awareness of self and their place in the world. We encourage the girls to become more conscious of their physical and emotional wellbeing, their social responsibility, as well as their personal goals and ideals. We use the rich history of our country to help them to explore who they are, how they benefit from the community around them, and the contributions that they would like to make in return. Thinking skills are infused into all aspects of the curriculum. Computers, iPads, and interactive whiteboards are used in lessons to prepare the girls to be 21st Century citizens. Afrikaans and isi-Zulu are taught from Grade 1.

Since 2009, Thinking Skill have been an integral part of the curriculum, preparing pupils for the challenges of higher education and life itself. We strive to prepare our girls to lead ‘life of significance’ in a world of exponential change. Roedean is the only school in SA to be accredited as a Thinking School from Grades 0-12.
