Leadership Development

The leadership programme of Roedean School (SA) is service based.

Before their Matric year, girls are invited to play an active, and preferably a leading role, in any number of the many interest areas and pupil committees that add value to the life of the school.

These include but are not limited to their involvement with the Round Square committees, playing Sport, pursuing Arts & Cultural interests, the President’s Award, International Exchanges, supporting our Social Responsibility projects, and assisting and leading House events. Under the guidance of staff, these activities and committees are girl-driven and afford our pupils the opportunity to express themselves in a way that best reflects their passions and interests.
Active girls will make decisions, develop organisational skills, communicate and influence people of different ages, and enhance the life of the school – in other words, they will practise leadership.

In the Matric year, there are a clearly defined range of leadership levels (Bronze, Silver and a Senior Prefect) unified by a common values-driven approach. By recognizing the experiences, contribution and good judgement of girls, the system enables some to accept new work and responsibilities as school leaders.

Actual selection for Matric leadership is an evolving process that will continue to be refined so that the School best meets the needs of pupils and the educational outcomes intended.

Small, incremental changes will be introduced, with a huge amount of advocacy.

Currently, more attention is being drawn to the various skills and competencies, called “Criteria” and the descriptors, called “Standards”, to help educate the girls around the work of Prefect leadership. The “Leadership Journey” of each girl from Lowers onwards is also being profiled. The importance of leading an active life at school, or outside of school, is essential. This will help to grow their confidence, alongside the confidence others will place in them, due to the skills and experiences they have gathered through the years.

SA's Pioneers of Cognitive Education

Since 2009, Thinking Skill have been an integral part of the curriculum, preparing pupils for the challenges of higher education and life itself. We strive to prepare our girls to lead ‘life of significance’ in a world of exponential change. Roedean is the only school in SA to be accredited as a Thinking School from Grades 0-12.
