Music & Arts

Music Department

Music forms an integral part of the daily life at Roedean and girls are encouraged to take up a musical instrument. Our various musical groups are often seen performing for school engagements and other prestigious calendar events.

Roedean School offers both a Contemporary and Classical department, where the girls have the opportunity to receive tuition in instruments ranging from Drums and Bass Guitar to Piano and orchestral instruments.

The Contemporary Department accommodates rehearsal facilities for the Orchestra, Jazz Band, Rock and Pop bands with teaching facilities for the individual instruments. The Classical Department accommodates practice rooms and teaching facilities for Subject Music and individual tuition. Practical and Theory Examinations are offered with the Trinity School of London and The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop, and forms part of the practical component for the curriculum Subject Music.

The Music Picnic takes place each year in late August and is truly a highlight on the events calendar. Picnic baskets are hauled out from the back of closets, hats are dusted and the Music Department prepares for a celebration of sound. Both the Junior School and Senior School music groups perform, providing enjoyment for the Roedean community.

We are honoured to have hosted the Roedean Music Competition in collaboration with Yamaha and Lovemore Music for the last fifteen years. Generously sponsored by the aforementioned organisations, this competition welcomes the finest talent from schools throughout Gauteng. After several days of adjudication, finalists are chosen to perform at a prestigious Gala Evening where the winners of each category are decided.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts course is concerned with the development of the pupil’s aesthetic sense and an awareness of the value of Art as an integral part of daily life. The pupil is guided to develop conceptual and practical skills, as well as a critical ability to understand and express opinion on Visual Culture Studies and artworks.

During the FET phase (Grades 10-12), pupils will experiment with various media and techniques with the aim to compile a portfolio of practical work in which their evolution as artist is displayed. Emphasis is placed on the development of creative process and conceptualisation skills. Exposure to, and exploration of, contemporary art making practices including printmaking, painting, drawing, photography and design are encouraged, avoiding prescriptive methods of expression, thus facilitating flexibility in choice of subject matter and means of expression.

Design

Design is a relatively new accredited subject for schools. At this stage Design courses can be taken on a diploma and B.Tech degree level at certain Universities. Not all Design disciplines are available as B.Tech degrees, however, and some investigation is therefore advised. There are also a number of private colleges offering Design and again some are accredited for B.Tech degree level. As such, Design is taken as an additional subject in Matric. An informed choice is made in the last term of Ante Matric regarding this.

Design can be said to be increasingly relevant as a subject career, we are surrounded by Design on a daily level. From the packaging of our mild and cereal to our shoes and the cars we drive. The field of Design has so many genres, the more prominent ones for tertiary study being Interior Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Fashion Design and Multimedia Studies.

SA's Pioneers of Cognitive Education

Since 2009, Thinking Skill have been an integral part of the curriculum, preparing pupils for the challenges of higher education and life itself. We strive to prepare our girls to lead ‘life of significance’ in a world of exponential change. Roedean is the only school in SA to be accredited as a Thinking School from Grades 0-12.
