Roedean’s Community Partner, Flying Children, an early-childhood development programme requested Roedean pupils to make stilts for the 12 crèches in Slovoville that are affiliated to the programme. The Grade 11 pupils were so delighted with the stilts that they made that they had fun trying them out at lunch!

Yeoville Community School Literacy Enrichment Project
The Link @ Yeoville Community School will re-open for scholars (who are on private-school holidays) who wish to participate in Community Service at Yeoville Community School, from Monday, 15 April 2013 to Thursday, 18 April 2013, from 8:00 until 10:00.

Volunteers will work on a one-to-one basis with a selected Grade 2 or Grade 3 child. For many of these children, spoken English is heard only in the classrooms, and they have very little experience of books, either at school or at home. This volunteer programme uses the paired-and-shared reading scheme and assists children who are learning English as their second language. A volunteer will spend two 45-minute sessions with each child, doing, first “pairing reading”, then teaching the child sight words, handwriting skills, and letter sounds, and, finally, “share” a story with the child. They have a wonderful collection of both readers and books for the volunteers to use and all other materials are provided.

The programme will run in the Link @ Yeoville Community School’s classroom. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail either Lynette Jackson on andrewjack@telkomsa.net, or contact Shetal Patel on patelsjp@iburst.co.za or telephonically on 083 440 1114.

You will need to confirm beforehand whether or not you will be attending, as arrangements will be made to allocate specific children to you for 2 hours each day.
Human Rights Day

A group of 30 pupils, accompanied by staff, celebrated Human Rights Day, 21 March, in the heart of Slovoville by painting alongside community members, on two crèches affiliated to Roedean’s Community Partner Flying Children (www.flyingchildren.co.za). Some girls stencilled and painted intricate designs on the walls of the classrooms, while others sanded and painted external walls and jungle gyms. The day ended with an action-packed game, initiated by energetic volunteers and children from the neighbourhood. Exhausted and ‘painted’, volunteers returned with a deeper understanding of the value of this commemorative day, Human Rights Day.

Roedean (SA) held their annual fashion show on Friday 5th May. The Grade 11’s decided to emphasize the fact that “fashion is essentially about making statements”. Forming part of this unusual Fashion Show was a Photography and Design competition. Roedean’s aspiring designers chose to make statements about causes and issues that are of particular concern to them, and are especially relevant to the African continent.

Part of the brief was to incorporate some form of anti-waste material in the designs. With characteristic concern about contemporary society, Roedean’s designers chose many meaningful and even controversial themes, ranging from ‘Deforestation’ to ‘Pollution of the seas’. Each design was both chic and challenging: a comment on an aspect of the 21st century world.

The judges of the Design competition were Craig Jacobs and Sarah Parcell, and the Photography competition was judged by Debbie Yazbek and Jodi Bieber. All the judges remarked on the designers’ blend of concern, social awareness and creativity.

Fashion labels were also showcased, the popular brands being ‘Cotton on’, ‘Rozanne & Pushkin’, ‘Fundudzi’, and ‘Egality’. Each year ‘Lisof’ send a selection of their top designs for the girls to model and these were a most popular feature of the show. An online dress hire company stocking international labels made its debut on the Roedean ramp. ‘Want me wear me’ was a welcome new edition.

We will never forget our amazing achievements in swimming, tennis, diving and water polo, but now our focus is definitely on hockey and netball. What better way to start the season with our super blue astro and brand new tennis courts Mini hockey, on Saturdays, for Grade 0 – Form, is planned for next term.

We are delighted with the attendance at practices and hopefully this commitment will continue throughout the winter season.

Her commitment to Roedean in all spheres of school life and her support of the girls academically, culturally, and in the sporting arena are much appreciated. Her excellent administrative skills and her care and concern for the girls, parents, and her colleagues are deeply appreciated. Her implementation of the active classroom and the concept of differentiated learning in the classroom are valuable additions to our curriculum. She epitomizes, in the wise words of Aristotle (384 – 322 BC):

“One must learn by doing the thing for though; you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try”.
Our warmest wishes go with Judy and her family as she takes on new and exciting challenges in France.

We also bid adieu to Mrs Nicky Fyall, a poignant farewell after 18 years of committed and loyal service to Roedean. Mrs Fyall has made a significant different in the lives of so many of our St Margaret’s girls. Her irrepressible spirit and her enthusiasm to extend and develop every pupil in her care are what make her an extraordinary teacher. Her focus on empowering the girls’ strengths and creating an ambience of both inquiry and joy in every school experience, are an example for us all. Her support of her colleagues and the Roedean community is much appreciated by us all.

In short, there are people in the world, a few who carry into the art of living consciously or unconsciously, a certain grace, a certain finesse, a certain sense of style and great depth of compassion. If anything can justify the world and its beauty they are part of that. In our view, Madam Fyall is that person.

Official Opening of the New Sports Facilities.

On Friday 17 May 2013 from 08:00- 10:00 We look forward to the official opening of all our sporting facilities. Our guest speaker for the event is Cindy Poluta of both 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Talk Radio 702.

Cindy is an award winning sports journalist in a traditionally male-dominated field. She is the EWN Joburg Sports Editor and current morning sports anchor on both 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Talk Radio 702. Growing up with two older brothers and playing lots of sports at school, Cindy has always been a sports fan. A colleague who knew this suggested she get into sports presenting. She took this advice to heart and in 2002 convinced the 94.7 station manager to create a weekend sports slot and to put her in the role. While running with sports on the weekend, Cindy’s weeks were spent at Supersport where she co-anchored a daily sports show and hosted much of the Pro-20 series among other productions. In 2008 Cindy left Supersport to focus on her radio work and motherhood but continues to do voice overs for the sports channels, including all the Let’s Play inserts. Cindy was also the local voice on Fox TV’s afternoon updates during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The following year, Cindy was named the Sports Presenter of the year in the 2011 MTN Radio Award.

We will also be joined by members of the Roedean Board, PTA, SAORA and Parent body. This is another fitting gift to the school as we celebrate decades of tradition of providing wonderful opportunities for our girls to build fitness, develop skills and share in the love of sports.
