Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
From time to time, the PTA supports social responsibility projects/initiatives in the Junior- and Senior schools, working closely with all stakeholders to make a meaningful contribution to the broader community. Examples of such initiatives include:
2016 Senior School Women’s Health Initiative
We made a profit of R20 000 this year from our Mothers’ and Daughters’ lunch (even though our primary focus with this event is not to raise funds, but to build the Roedean community). We decided to donate this profit to the Senior School Mandela Day Women’s Health Initiative, and to top it up in order to match Roedean School’s contribution of R30 000. Across South Africa approximately nine million school girls between the ages of 9 and 18 miss a week of school every month because they can’t afford feminine health care products. With the support of the Roedean community, Senior School girls across all grades packed 420 Roedean Solidarity Packs (containing sanitary products, including washable sanitary pads) for distribution to a target community in Limpopo. Thank you to all our supporters and avid buyers of raffle tickets at the Mothers’ and Daughters’ lunch – you made it possible for the PTA to participate in this worthwhile project!
2016 Junior School, School SleepOut
We are also fortunate to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Lower IV & Upper IV School SleepOutTM arranged in the Junior School to show solidarity to young homeless people, and to collect stationary for the Everest Primary School. The PTA facilitated the making of snuggler sleeping bags out of newspaper, duct tape and plastic by around 45 LIV’s and UIV’s. They made easy work of a fairly complicated process. The sleeping bags will, with the help of Lions Club International (Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg) be donated to the homeless. Thank you to the Lions Club members for their hands-on demonsration, and to Mr Hoosain Karjieker for donation of the old
Everest Primary School – 2016 Mandela Day Party
The PTA arranged a Mandela Day party for the Everest Primary School in Newclare, Johannesburg. This school faces many challenges, arising from abject poverty in the community it serves, to complications arising from the fact that many of the learners come from dysfunctional families. It was very rewarding to see 900 little faces light up at the sight of popcorn, candy floss, jumping castles, and a party soccer pitch. We would like to thank Mr Collen Madziro of Unforgettable Parties who supported us by agreeing to a greatly discounted rate. The highlight of the party was without a doubt the stilt walkers arranged by Rachel and Dali Tambo’s Carnival Company. Their acrobatic antics had party goers mesmerized.
Hillbrow Theatre Upgrade
We facilitated donation by Roedean of its old Auditorium chairs, enabling the upgrade of the Hilbrow Theatre’s facilities.
