South Africa has eleven official languages and schools are required to offer one at Home Language level and the other at First Additional level. African languages, being isiZulu and SeSotho, are offered as First Additional Languages. They are offered from LV to Matric.
In our lessons we encourage learners to use the target language in their learning as this enhances their ability and confidence in speaking the language. We do this by engaging learners in activities that allow them to participate orally and through writing. We look at different types of literary genres to improve their interest, vocabulary and way of communicating. We teach our learners more about South African cultures. This is done by going to tours, projects and different oral assessments to promote cultural understanding and well-being of all South Africans. To expose our learners to other forms of engagements we have a Soweto Tour where our learners are given an opportunity to engage with different people from Soweto and Kliptown.
The isiZulu Department has recently participated in isiZulu Olympiad, which is a new concept in the African Languages. We are at the stage of introducing Debating and Public Speaking. This will enable our learners to improve their communication skills.
The Department has a team of wonderful professionals who have the love of promoting the African Languages. They always strive to keep learners motivated to speak, read, listening and write with confidence.
