SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES

General Award Criteria for Sport and Cultural Scholarships

  • Must be Lower V (Grade 8) or Upper V (Grade 10) on entry.
  • Open to pupils from Roedean Junior School and other schools.
  • This scholarship may be awarded at the discretion of the Executive Head, acting in consultation with the Bursary & Scholarship Committee.
  • The candidate will be selected according to the criteria of outstanding contributions, whether by way of meritorious sporting achievement or cultural achievement.
  • The applicant and at least one parent should be South African citizens or have permanent residence. Roedean School reserves the right to request proof of this.

Further Award Criteria for Sport and Cultural

Sports

  • The applicant should be of provincial standard in at least one sport and proof of provincial colours should be submitted with the application. The applicant should play at least two other sports offered at Roedean School (SA) at A-team standard.
  • Applications close on 15 February, 2021 and interviews will be conducted on Saturday, 20 February.
  • No award will be made if the level of skill and/or ability demonstrated is not high enough to justify it. The award is subject to the candidate maintaining a high standard of academic work, sporting achievement, and conduct.
  • Provision will not be made for the interview to be conducted on an alternative day.
  • The financial position of the parents is not a criterion.
  • The decisions of the Bursary & Scholarship Committee in awarding this scholarship will be final and no correspondence will be entered into in this regard.
  • Mrs Rogers, the Executive Head, will notify the winners, telephonically, on 17 March, 2021, and all candidates will receive a letter informing them of the winners. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the results of the interviews. The scholarship will commence at the beginning of 2022.
  • In making application, a detailed Grade 6 report will be required. In addition, any talent displayed by the candidate in the fields of music, dramatic arts, and/or visual arts should be mentioned. We reserve the right to request a letter of recommendation from the head of the school which the candidate currently attends.
  • Unsuccessful candidates are not under any obligation whatsoever to attend Roedean School (SA).
  • Before making application, parents should consult the Head of the school currently attended by their daughter.

Cultural

  • On receipt of an application form and a portfolio of evidence of cultural achievement, an interview will be scheduled at which the applicant will be required to demonstrate her skills in the discipline of choice, as detailed below.

  • The discipline of expertise, i.e. visual arts, music, or dramatic arts must be taken as a subject to Matriculation level.

Dramatic Arts:

  • An interview will be required focussing on the applicant’s understanding of, interest, and experience in the field of the performing arts.
  • The applicant must present a prepared monologue and poem (published works).
  • She may be requested to perform an unprepared piece.
  • Proof of any previous involvement in Dramatic Arts and related activities is required.
  • The applicant will be required to study Dramatic Arts as a Matriculation subject and participate in school productions.

Music:

  • The candidate must present a balanced programme of 2-3 pieces – minimum standard of playing must be comparable to Grade 5. The performance must not exceed 15 minutes.
  • A theory paper, comparable to Grade 2, will be written.
  • The applicant should have a musical curriculum vitae illustrating past participation.
  • An interview will be required, focusing on the candidate’s interest in Music.
  • The candidate should have a musical curriculum vitae, illustrating past involvement in music.
  • The applicant must have participated regularly, and for a sustained period, in at least one music group activity, and must continue such activity at Roedean, e.g.: by joining the choir, orchestra, etc.
  • The applicant will be required to study Music as a Matriculation subject and participate in school musical events.

Visual Arts:

  • The candidate’s work must bear evidence of significant integration of Art into her daily life

Portfolio requirements:

  • A minimum of three most recent art works must be presented (not mounted or framed). Three different media must have been used: e.g.: charcoal, watercolour, and oil, or mixed media.
  • The works must be verified as the applicant’s own original product.
  • A short curriculum vitae is required describing the applicant’s activities, spanning at least two years prior to date of application.
  • Merits or certificates must be included on application.

The applicant will be required to engage in:

  • A half-hour drawing session
  • A fifteen-minute interview
  • The application will be required to study Visual Arts as a Matriculation subject.

Conditions of Continued Support / Withdrawal from Award (annual review)

Continued Support Conditions

  • Behaviour — the candidate must conform to the Guiding Principles of Roedean School (SA) and make a positive contribution to the school community.
  • To retain the scholarship, the student will be assessed annually on academic performance, her skill and ability in her chosen discipline, and her level of commitment to the school.
  • The award is subject to the candidate maintaining a high standard of work and conduct.

Withdrawal Support Conditions

  • This award may be forfeited in consequence of unsatisfactory work or conduct, as determined by the Executive Head acting in consultation with the Bursary & Scholarship Committee.
  • This award may be withdrawn due to non-payment of school fees.

Roedean School Bursaries

Working in partnership with the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and the Student Scholarship Programme (SSP), Roedean awards four or five merit bursaries each year to pupils entering Grade 8. They are awarded to pupils who excel academically and demonstrate the ability to make contributions to Roedean in other areas.

Applications are made through Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and SSP, who recommend suitable candidates to the school. These candidates are then interviewed by the school.
