Junior School Sport

Overview

Sport is an integral part of teaching and learning at Roedean School and the sporting activities on offer address the active needs of each child, as well as provide a foundation for future excellence.

Sport exercises each student’s faculties in the physical, cognitive and emotional realms. Our aim is to do more than just feed a pupil’s capacity for growth and development; ultimately, it is to direct that growth and development in accordance with what are believed to be the best long-term interests of the child.

We believe that physical activity and development are an important part of a holistic approach to education. Roedean strongly supports the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Philosophy, which highlights the exposure to a variety of sports, while creating a lifelong passion for sport and an active lifestyle.

The Sports Department is passionate about its successes and works tirelessly to improve on its implementation.

Message from the Head of Junior School Sport

Participation and commitment

One of the main objectives of Sport at Roedean is to give pupils opportunities to participate in activities that develop their physical potential and enhance their school experiences. We believe that participation in sport promotes important life skills, such as teamwork and sportsmanship, and develops resilience, determination, and the ability to deal with disappointment. Sport also encourages diligence and perseverance, habits of mind deemed to be important in each of our pupils’ overall development.

The promotion of an active lifestyle and a life-long commitment to physical activity is close to our hearts, as it has been clearly established that physical activity contributes to psychological well-being. We believe that sport should be a source of great pleasure, and we actively seek to promote this.
