SENIOR SCHOOL CURRICULUM

IT Integration

IT Integration

While current classrooms and curricula were developed to address the needs of an industrial age of factory production, we now face a new industrial age of artificial intelligence and cyber-physical systems.

At Roedean School (SA) our teachers assist pupils with implementing 21st century technological solutions to best prepare them for today’s and tomorrow’s world. We rely on a variety of carefully vetted and highly recommended educational platforms and software. As a community, we are continually redesigning our curricula and revisiting pedagogies to ensure that what we teach, how we teach, and where we teach those skills remains relevant. The curriculum always informs the need for and requirements of educational technology integration. We explore models such as the flipped classroom, inquiry-based learning and cross-curricular themes. Technology is a given, not a ‘nice to have’. Our physical learning spaces are rendered more collaborative and flexible through the use of digital technologies.

Pupils have the use of dedicated computer and media centres with specialist software, but are able to use their phones, tablets or laptops from anywhere in the school, when required, using our excellent WiFi network. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Every pupil is given a Microsoft Office licence and can install Office packages on up to 5 devices of her choice. Adobe Creative Suite is loaded on the pcs in our computer centres and students have access to 3D printing and CAD software. We use Teams as a learning management system for all online and hybrid classes, and for submission of digital work. Cloud printers are available for ease of printing.

While IT is integrated across the curriculum, Computer Science as a subject is not ignored.  Explicit lessons in digital literacy, digital citizenship, computational thinking, coding & robotics are offered from Grades 0 to 9.  Information Technology can be taken as a subject to Matric. We believe in the absolute imperative of preparing all our pupils for a career in IT or for using IT effectively in the careers of their choice.
