During Term 2, the sustainable development goal 5: Gender Equality is the focus. “Women’s Solidarity” is the theme for the timetabled social responsibility lessons, as a build-up to Women’s’ Day on the 9 August and the annual Phedisang Residential Social Development Project in Limpopo.
The Grade 11 students are encouraged to apply for the 7 day Phedisang Residential Social Development Project. A selected group of students reside in a local village and facilitate training with the Phedisang leaders on Women’s Health and Reproductive issues after which sustainable sanitary products are distributed to the community, as an activation for Women’s Month.
A Women’s Day march and netball tournament are organised by the Roedean volunteers and Phedisang leaders to celebrate their solidarity.
Since the inception of the Women’s Health Initiative, four years ago, the Roedean Community has provided 1 600 girls with sustainable sanitary products. Roedean believes in Mandela’s statement, that ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ thus enabling these young women to attend school regularly with the long term possibility of breaking the cycle of poverty.
Due to Covid, however, the residential project did not take place in 2020 but the young women on the project were able to participate in the online Girls’ Leadership Summit 2020 which proved to be a valuable learning opportunity for them.
